Who are we

Pestalozzi International is a family of nonprofit organizations that offers child-centered education to disadvantaged children in the Global South, supporting economic growth and social mobility. Recognizing the uniqueness of every child's fullest potential, we educate beyond the classroom to develop future-oriented vocational skills and nurture emotional, social and mental well-being. This education for life creates self-reliant adults with the moral confidence to contribute meaningfully to their communities and as global citizens.

On September 13th 2024 the UK charities Pestalozzi World Children's Trust and Pestalozzi International Foundation (Charity no.1‌098422) merged, renaming to Pestalozzi International under Charity number 1172364).

Pestalozzi International member organizations are Pestalozzi US Children's Charity Inc., US registered E.I. Number 04-3407363 and the Pestalozzi Overseas Children's Foundation, Swiss registered charity number CH-020.7.001.633-9. 

Where we collect information from

We may get in touch and collect information in the following ways:

Information you share with us: We may obtain personal information from you when, for example, you sign up for one of our online campaigns or our newsletters, apply to become a volunteer, register for or take part in an event, make a donation, or join our mailing list.

Information from Third Parties: Sometimes, we receive information about you from independent third parties, but only where you’ve given them permission to share it with us. For example, fundraising sites like JustGiving or event organizers such as the London Marathon might pass along your information. You should check their privacy notice when you provide your information to understand how they handle your information. Once we get it, it will be covered by our privacy notice as well as by the originating third party.

Information we get from your use of our website and services: We collect information about the services you use and how you use them, like when you watch a video on YouTube, use our apps, visit our websites, or view and interact with our ads and content.

Information in the public domain: We may obtain some information from publicly available sources such as Companies House, newspaper articles or open postings on social media such as Facebook and LinkedIn. This is not an exhaustive list of the public sources.

You, our supporters, really are the life-blood of our Charity. We always act on your instructions, and we aim to put you in control of your relationship with us. Our aim is to communicate with you in a way that makes you want to stay involved with us as you see the value and impact of your support.

Information we collect

The types of personal information that Pestalozzi International collects may include:
Your title, name, gender, and date of birth;

  • Your contact details (address, email, phone number and social media contact details);
  • Family and spouse/partner details, relationships to other supporters;
  • Your professional activities and employment details;
  • Current interests and activities;
  • Gift Aid status and records of donations;
  • Contact preferences;
  • Information about your wealth;
  • Media articles about you;
  • Your IP address, location, browser type and information on how you interact on our website;
  • Your bank or credit card details in line with payment card industry standards; and,
  • Any other information provided by yourself at the request of Pestalozzi International.

Where appropriate, we may also ask your interests and motivation for supporting Pestalozzi International, although we will never make this question mandatory, and only want to know the answer if you are comfortable providing us with that information.

In some limited circumstances, the personal information that Pestalozzi International collects may include information that is considered 'special category data’. This is personal information regarding racial or ethnic origins, political opinions, religious beliefs, and health (including mental health). We may also collect criminal information where relevant. Where this information is collected, we will tell you, so you know why it is needed.

What we do with your information

If you support us, for example by donating, volunteering, registering to fundraise, or signing up for an event, we will mainly use your information to:

  • Provide you with the information, activity, services, or products or that you asked for;
  • Provide you information about other activity, services, or products we think might interest you where you have consented to being contacted;
  • Administer your donation or support your fundraising
  • Send you surveys, and for market research;
  • Invite you to events;
  • Keep a record of your relationship with us and record the contact we have with you;
  • Ensure we know how you prefer to be contacted; and
  • Conduct data quality tests to improve insights, functionality, and the overall performance of our technology systems, reporting and infrastructure.

We use tracking tools to improve the effectiveness of our communications with you, including tracking whether you open emails we send you and which links you click within a message.

We may also use personal information to carry out due diligence in line with our Accepting, Refusing and Returning Donations Policy so that we are fundraising in accordance within the law, the code of fundraising practice, and our internal policies and procedures.

We will not share data with other organizations for marketing purposes

Please be assured that you will not receive offers from other companies or organizations as a result of giving your details to us.

We may need to share limited information with our service providers who help us to prepare and send you our communications or process your donation and other responses. 

Who do we share your personal data with

We are committed to protecting your data, and therefore it will never be sold to external organizations and will only be disclosed to those acting as agents and data processors carrying out work on our behalf. Where we enter a relationship with an external party, any such arrangements will be subject to a formal agreement between Pestalozzi International and that organization to protect the security of your data. These Parties may include:

Suppliers who send out communications on our behalf, such as invitations to our events – for example, email companies like DotDigital;

Wealth screening and insight companies (see section “Legal basis for processing your information”  for more information);

Other charities and our Development Boards and Trustees, where we share information for internal procedures and policies only. Should we merge with another organization to form a new entity, your data may be transferred to the new entity;

Our delivery partners within the UK or abroad to enable us to deliver our programs effectively.

Legal basis for processing your information

Under the GDPR and the UK, US and Swiss DPA’s, we must have a legal reason to collect, keep and use your data. We rely on the following legal basis for processing your data:

  • Consent 
  • Legal obligation
  • Legitimate interests

We process your personal data for our legitimate interests to allow us to run Pestalozzi International as a charitable entity effectively and in pursuit of our objectives. When we process your personal information for our legitimate interests, we make sure to consider and balance any potential impact on you and your rights under applicable data protection laws.

We will always ensure that your personal data will not be used where our interests are overridden by the impact on you. 

The following are some examples of instances where we process your data for our legitimate interest:

Direct marketing: We will send postal marketing and fundraising requests which further the aims and objectives of Pestalozzi International and do not unduly impact the rights of the individual.

We may also use information in the public domain, for example listed Directorships or typical earnings in each area

Profiling and analyzing information: We carry out limited profiling and research to help us understand our donors and potential donors, including gathering information from publicly available resources to give an insight into philanthropic interests and ability to support Pestalozzi International. 

Profiling and analyzing information of our supporters

In order to tailor the type and level of support we ask you for, we may analyze personal information we collect about you, including how you have engaged with us previously, demographic information, measures of affluence, philanthropic interests and networks.

In some instances, we may use third-party wealth screening companies or insight companies to provide us with general information about you. (Please refer to section “Who de we share your data with”  for further information on data shared with third parties.)

How to stop or change how we communicate with you

Your rights and how to access, correct or delete your information

Under the GDPR, you have the following rights in relation to your personal data:

  • Right to be informed (about what data we process, how we process it, why we process it and other key information)
  • Right to request a copy of the information we hold about you
  • Right to edit and update your information
  • Right to request to have your information erased
  • Right to restrict processing of your information 
  • Right to object to processing of your information – including automated decision making and profiling
  • Right to data portability

If you wish to exercise your rights, please address your request, by email or mail, to our Data Protection Officer. To help us locate information about you (or in case we need to get in touch with you to obtain further information to help us locate your records), please include your full name, address, and date of birth with your request.

If you do not want to receive any further information about Pestalozzi International and would like us to remove your name from our mailing list, use the unsubscribe link in the email you have received. You can also contact us using the details above.

How we keep your data safe

We aim to ensure that there are appropriate physical, technical and managerial controls in place to protect any personal information you may provide to us; for example, our online forms are always encrypted, and our network is protected and monitored. Within our offices, all our staff receive training on handling data securely.

Where we use external companies to collect or process data on our behalf, we carry out comprehensive checks on them before we work with them and ensure that contracts are in place that set out our expectations and requirements. We may need to transfer your personal data outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) to allow them to perform services on our behalf (for example invitation or participation in an event outside of the EEA in support of The King’s Trust). In doing so, your data may be stored or processed outside of the EEA. Where this happens, we will endeavor to ensure that your data is being processed in accordance with the appropriate security requirements in line with our legal responsibilities, and by submitting your details in such circumstances you agree to this transfer.

Despite all of our precautions, no data transmission over the internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. So, whilst we will always strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of any information which you disclose to us and so wish to draw your attention that you do so at your own risk.

Your data and social media

We may use your email address and phone number to match to your account on Facebook or other social media sites in order to show you content while you are using these services. We will only do this where you have opted in to respectively accepted by implied behavior our marketing emails or phone calls, and your personal data is kept secure at all times. We may also use your email address and phone number to link to Facebook or other social media sites in order to identify other users of these sites whom we believe would be interested in Pestalozzi International Foundation, and we may then show them our content.

Cookies

Pestalozzi International also uses cookies. Cookies are small text files on your device (computer, smart phone etc.). They are made by your web browser when you visit a website. Every time you go back to that website, your browser will send the cookie file back to the website’s server. They improve your experience of using a website, for example, by remembering your preference settings and by measuring your use of a website to ensure that it meets your needs. Cookies can also be used to show you relevant content on social media services such as Facebook – these are known as ‘retargeting’ or ‘advertising’ cookies.

How long we store your data for

We will hold your personal information on our systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant activity. If you request that we stop sending you marketing materials, we will keep a record of your contact details and appropriate information to enable us to comply with your request not to be contacted by us. We won’t keep any information that we don’t need.

You can also contact the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at www.ico.org.uk to find out more or report a concern. The ICO is UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals. We work with them to make sure that we collect, store, and use your information appropriately and not do anything you would not reasonably expect us to do with your data.

We also apply and respect the data protection act of the European Union, namely GDPR, as well as the US and Swiss data protection acts.
