Denise Kisimba, a Pestalozzi Zambia alumna, is on a path to international impact, recently securing a MasterCard Foundation scholarship to study International Relations at the United States International University – Africa. Originally from Maheba refugee camp in Zambia, Denise knows firsthand the challenges of limited access to education and support. Inspired by her experiences and the values instilled by Pestalozzi, she returned to her community to create GIRL UP, a group that provides guidance and support for young girls who are pregnant and often without access to education.

Denise and her team at GIRL UP aim to show these young women that they still have a future. The group teaches them self-care, educates them on health matters, and promotes self-sufficiency, empowering them to set higher standards for themselves and their children. Inspired by her mentors at Pestalozzi, Denise emphasizes the importance of self-worth and resilience, encouraging young mothers to pursue their dreams despite the obstacles they face.

Through her work, Denise embodies the Pestalozzi ethos of “Head, Heart, and Hands”—combining intellect, compassion, and practical skills. Her experiences at Pestalozzi, including engaging in community service and leadership roles, strengthened her desire to advocate for others. As a former vice head girl, JETS club president, and netball team leader, Denise developed communication and leadership skills that prepared her for her current mission.

Driven to effect change, Denise aspires to work with the UNHCR to support and protect refugees worldwide. By studying International Relations, she hopes to address injustices and bring solutions to global challenges. Denise’s journey, marked by resilience and compassion, reflects the impact of Pestalozzi’s mission to empower young leaders who uplift their communities.
