How Samikshya fights for climate justice

Samikshya Dhami, a Pestalozzi Scholar from Nepal, embodies the power of education in transforming lives. Her journey began in her village, where her parents, both teachers, recognized the value of education despite the limitations of local schooling. At just two years old, Samikshya moved to Kathmandu to live with her grandmother, a pivotal step that set the stage for her academic pursuits.

A partial scholarship allowed her to attend Budhanilkantha School, but it was Pestalozzi that enabled her to complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Afterward, Samikshya’s passion for social and environmental justice grew at Smith College, where she earned a BA, double majoring in Governmental Studies and Environmental Science and Policy. Her undergraduate work focused on environmental justice, driven by her commitment to serve marginalized communities affected by climate change.
During her time at Smith, Samikshya was a member of the Leadership for Equity Centre Design program, curating community events to foster leadership. Her dedication also took her to Paraguay, where she collaborated on a U.S. Embassy project to create educational opportunities for Paraguayan students. These experiences solidified her commitment to making a global impact.
Samikshya pursued her master’s degree in City, Urban, Community, and Regional Planning at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, specializing in climate resilience and economic development. Before her graduate studies, she worked at the Black Economic Council of Massachusetts, promoting inclusive development, and at Throwe Environmental, focusing on environmental consulting.
Reflecting on her journey, Samikshya emphasizes the foundational role of Pestalozzi: “Pestalozzi was a stepping stone... The passion I have for the environment and leadership... was very much strengthened there.” She highlights the holistic education and diverse environment that helped her understand her identity and mission.
Now, as a Clean Energy and Climate Planning Intern at the Metropolitan Area Planning Council in Boston, Samikshya continues to work toward a more equitable future. Her story is a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of education and the importance of creating opportunities for all, not just the fortunate few.
