Supporting Mental Health at Pestalozzi Nepal
As the Child Wellbeing and Development Officer at Pestalozzi Nepal, Reena is dedicated to the well-being of both our children and staff. Her role is crucial to forming a safe environment of compassion, self-care, and open communication.
Introducing Mindful Awareness sessions
At Pestalozzi Nepal, kindness and compassion are at the core of daily practices. This year, Reena introduced Mindful Awareness sessions for our children, teaching them to embrace the present moment and build emotional resilience. These practices not only help students develop effective coping strategies but also enhance their self-esteem and strengthen their connections with peers. By integrating Social Emotional and Ethical Learning (SEE) and including Pestalozzi Teaching Materials in our curriculum, Reena’s approach nurtures both the minds and hearts of students, using — Head, Heart, and Hands as a framework to promote holistic learning.
Reena’s efforts extend beyond the children, as she prioritises staff well-being through a culture of self-care and open dialogue. From mindful activities to outdoor experiences, she encourages the team to take moments to recharge. Team-building games and one-to-one counselling sessions create a safe space for staff to share challenges and support one another. This environment of mutual respect and understanding is further strengthened during staff meetings, where open discussions, idea-sharing, and recognition of achievements are part of fostering a workplace that values both professional growth and personal well-being.
Finding Balance and Support Within Our Community
Working with children at Pestalozzi Nepal has deepened Reena’s self-awareness, particularly in terms of emotional well-being and patience. Life in a communal setting can be overwhelming, demanding a careful balance of responsibilities. Reena lives by the mantra, "a listener needs a listener," and when challenges arise, she seeks guidance from colleagues across our three campuses (Nepal, India, and Zambia). This supportive network is essential for both the children and staff, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and growth that benefits everyone.
In one-to-one counselling sessions with children, Reena creates a safe and nurturing environment, using age-appropriate language to help children articulate their emotions, explore their experiences, and develop coping strategies. This individualised approach creates trust, empowers the children to manage their emotions, and lays the foundation for healthier mental well-being.
Celebrating Awareness and Empowering Change
A key tradition Reena has established at Pestalozzi Nepal is the monthly calendar of awareness days, keeping both staff and children informed and engaged. Through collaborative planning, these days become more than just events; they become opportunities to dive into important topics, share knowledge, and promote active participation in the community. By discussing themes related to rights and responsibilities, Reena helps develop social awareness and responsibility in our children.
Reena’s dedication to her work at Pestalozzi Nepal showcases the importance of community and education in shaping compassionate and responsible individuals. Her passion and commitment to mental health and well-being reminds everyone at Pestalozzi International that awareness is the first step to meaningful change.
We are immensely grateful to Reena for her tireless efforts, determination, and the invaluable support she extends to everyone in our community. In a world where kindness and empathy are needed more than ever, having Reena guide our children and staff is a true gift. She not only creates a culture of care and resilience but also inspires us all to build a more compassionate future.
